Preparing Your Home for Guests

A practical checklist for getting your home ready before company arrives, without last-minute stress.

Getting a home guest-ready doesn’t have to mean a full deep clean every time — a focused pass on the right areas covers most of what guests actually notice.

A few days before

  • Plan your cleaning day-by-day rather than saving it all for the last minute — spread bathrooms, floors, and the kitchen across a couple of days.
  • Wash guest bedding and towels ahead of time so they’re fresh, not just clean from storage.
  • Do a grocery run for anything you’ll need, so you’re not making last-minute trips the day guests arrive.
  • Declutter first. A tidy surface reads as clean even before it’s wiped down — see our Cleaning & Decluttering Tips.

The day before

  • Deep clean the bathroom(s) guests will use — this is the room people notice most.
  • Clean the kitchen thoroughly, including counters, the sink, and the outside of appliances.
  • Vacuum and mop main living areas.
  • Set up the guest room or sleeping area with fresh linens, extra blankets, and a clear space for their belongings.
  • Stock the bathroom with fresh towels, toilet paper, and basic toiletries in case they forgot something.

The morning guests arrive

  • Do a final walk-through with fresh eyes — check entryways, guest bathrooms, and common areas one more time.
  • Clear counters and tables of everyday clutter that’s accumulated overnight.
  • Take out the trash and recycling so nothing smells before guests arrive.
  • Open windows briefly (weather permitting) to freshen the air, or use a light air freshener if preferred.
  • Set out fresh hand towels in bathrooms guests will use.

Small touches that make a difference

  • A few chargers or a phone charging spot for guests
  • Extra pillows and blankets left visible, not tucked away
  • A clear answer ready for “where’s the bathroom / where do I put my bag” questions
  • Water glasses or a water pitcher left out, especially for overnight guests

Getting a home fully guest-ready is essentially a deep clean on a deadline. If time is the limiting factor more than knowing what to do, a Deep Cleaning service before a big visit covers exactly this.
