Cleaning & Decluttering Tips

How to approach decluttering so it actually reduces cleaning time, not just moves things around.

Decluttering and cleaning are related but different: cleaning removes dirt, decluttering removes excess. Doing the second makes the first significantly faster and easier to keep up with.

Declutter before you clean, not after

It’s tempting to clean around clutter, but wiping down a counter covered in mail and odds and ends takes longer than clearing it first. A quick declutter pass before cleaning almost always saves time overall.

Use the “would I buy this again” test

When deciding whether to keep something, ask if you’d buy it again today, knowing what you know now. It cuts through sentimental hesitation faster than asking whether you might use it someday.

Handle paper immediately

Mail, receipts, and papers are one of the fastest-growing clutter categories. Sort it the moment it comes in: recycle immediately, file what needs to be kept, and act on anything requiring a response within the week.

Tackle one category, not one room

Instead of decluttering “the bedroom,” try decluttering “all your shoes” or “all your coffee mugs,” wherever they’re stored throughout the house. Seeing everything in a category at once makes it much easier to see what’s excessive.

Set a limit, not just a pile

Rather than deciding item by item, pick a hard limit — “one drawer of cables,” “one shelf of vases” — and only keep what fits. It removes decision fatigue and forces real prioritization.

Give donations a real deadline

A box “to donate” that sits in the garage for six months hasn’t actually decluttered anything. Set a date to drop it off, and put it in the car so it’s ready to go.

Don’t buy storage to solve a clutter problem

More bins usually means more room to keep things you don’t need. Reduce the volume of items first — the right amount of storage becomes obvious once there’s genuinely less to store.

Maintain it with the one-minute rule

If putting something away takes under a minute, do it immediately instead of setting it down “for now.” Most everyday clutter is really just a backlog of one-minute tasks.

A home with less to move around is a home that’s genuinely faster to clean — see our Home Cleaning Tips for the cleaning side of that equation.
